I had been struggling with the constant pressures’ life was throwing at me, week after week month after month. After Losing my business, having a newborn and then like all of us life stopped still after being hit by the pandemic.

After retiring from rugby more than 2 years ago I was low after coming out of surgery to no job and the prospect of not using my leg properly again. As a result I had been chronic stomach pain, fatigue, lack of motivation, muscle wastage, Increasing joint pain (hip and knee after operations from a career in professional rugby) and a general feeling of apathy. 

I had tried so many quick fix ways to combat the symptoms, spoke to countless health professionals but just ended up getting the same advice. Which was to go onto SSRI drugs to manage the mental strain. For the stomach pain take another bout of antacid type medications. For the inflammation take more painkillers and anti-inflammatory drugs.

It seemed like everywhere I turned for help there was a health professional following robotic orders to fix a problem with a plaster and not delving deeper to find the root cause of the problem. So, if you need something done properly then do it yourself!

I started to read and research ways which I could reduce all my ailments and start to take control of my own life once again. So below are a year’s worth of book reading, trial and error supplement taking and lifestyle changes which got my life back on track.

Switch to a more whole-foods plant-based diet. (WFPB)

First of all, this doesn’t mean you have to become a vegan or a vegetarian! However, there is a huge amount of evidence that reducing the number of additives including those in most farmed meat and fish. Furthermore, Reducing processed products in your diet, can result in a reduction in many cancers, chronic issues such as stomach pain, intestinal inflammation or gastritis (Which is what I was diagnosed with). If you want to understand and read more, please look up these texts I used below to gain a better understanding of how eating this type of diet can prevent a myriad of physical and mental illnesses and how the gut-brain connection is a hugely misunderstood or undervalued section of modern day medicine.

For me the biggest change I saw was with eating plant-based home cooked meals after just 2 weeks of changing my diet. The stomach pain which had been with me for the best part of a year had completely gone without any medications at all!

The unbearable pain in my hip and knee which had me taking several anti-inflammatory drugs a day was now to a comfortable level within a month. After two months was almost completely gone!! It was an unbelievable feeling being able to enjoy my day without aches and pains by completely changing my diet. I stuck to a WFPB diet when at home and where I could out of the house. That being said If I eat meat it was out of the house in restaurants and making sure it is form a sustainable source. Making sure the fish is line caught or the livestock is grass-fed. This makes a huge difference to the hormones in meat and will reduce your exposure to high levels of hormones trapped and bioaccumulation in meat products.

Now to go over a full diet plan in this article isn’t feasible and not many people would read a full 10-page diet plan document and who has the time for that! Meditation, Mindfulness, kindness and gratitude.



Meditation has been practiced for millennia. However, in recent years studies have been confirming ancient beliefs with the power of medical advances in fMRI and EEG testing. The practice appears to have an amazing variety of neurological benefits several of which I have experienced for myself since taking up the practice over a year ago now. We will look a little further into these benefits and give recommendations of reading material and the methods used to Reduce stress and anxiety without the use of potentially harmful medications. In summary meditation is proven to reduce stress and anxiety as much as medications. It preserves the aging brain making it function equivalent to a much younger brain when we grow older. Can increase the retention of memory and aid learning by physically changing the cortical thickness of the hippocampus in just 8 weeks practice.  Can treat addiction dependency and make you a happier and more outgoing person which is beneficial to you and everyone around you.

Numerous apps which can be found on the app store the one I use which I like due to its simplicity is the Oak app. It’s a free app, which you can practice your breathing techniques as well as mindful meditation and express gratitude.

I also used a set of cards I stumbled across while down a research rabbit hole. LSW mind cards. These are a great tool to keep on your desk which are subdivided into 5 categories. Kindness, Ritual Gratitude, Journal and Reflection.

Kindness - Random acts of kindness not only help to boost your mood but can also make the recipients' day. Each Kindness card has a different action you can take designed to offer kindness towards the outside world.

Ritual - Building rituals into your daily life can be incredibly beneficial to your wellbeing. They can help you to slow down and connect with your actions in a world in which we are so used to racing through everything we do. Each Ritual card has a different short activity which can be turned into a ritual that can be incorporated into your daily routine.

Gratitude - Make time to stop and appreciate what makes you happy. Gratitude cards will remind you to look out for the little things daily in order to create greater overall happiness. Each card holds a different gratitude exercise to action daily.

Journal - Journalling is an incredibly powerful way to reflect on how you are living and what you could be doing differently to be more fulfilled. The Journal cards offer up a number of questions to help you dig deep and figure out what changes you might need to make, if any. When the same card is selected a second time, think about whether you can answer the question in the same way or what might have changed in your life that affects a new answer.

Reflection - Take 10 minutes of your day to reflect on the quote on your chosen card. Focus on how they apply to your life in the present and how you can use the meaning behind the words to better yourself and your life. When the same card is selected a second time, reflect on any changes you might have in your response dependent on where you are in the present moment.

Meditation and mindful practices are like investing into the stock market. You might not see much of a return on investment initially in-fact you might not notice many changes at all for a few months but once you do the results are compounding and exponential. So, invest in your mind today and reap the rewards tomorrow!
